Julian Germain (Photographer / Artist)

Many moons ago Julian Germain studied photography at Trent Poly in Nottingham and the Royal College of Art in London. He has published numerous photo books, including Steel Works, For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness, Classroom Portraits and the hugely influential In Soccer Wonderland, an extravagantly illustrated project about British football, not so much as a sport but as a social and cultural phenomenon. In Soccer Wonderland was also developed by the British Council into a large scale exhibition, which toured to Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Japan as well as numerous European countries.

From 2014-19, Germain set up the Ashington District Star, a free local newspaper for the Northumbrian ex-mining town, run with local people who wished to creatively explore their everyday surroundings. Julian’s projects are often collaborative and he has an ongoing belief in the value of popular photography and amateur creativity which are often celebrated as fundamental aspects of his work.

Parliament

Parliament is a leading visual effects studio with offices in Los Angeles and New York. Specializing in high-end commercials and music videos, they have been a proud sponsor of Barnsley FC since 2020.

Phil Crowe, co-founder of Parliament, was born and raised in Barnsley. A lifelong Barnsley fan, he has admired Julian’s work since his days at Ravensbourne Design College.

"Julian’s book, In a Soccer Wonderland, had a huge impact on me and my mates at college. Twenty-five years later, I had the chance to meet him, and together we conceived the idea for this book. It’s a dream come true to bring this project to life alongside Julian, the club, and, of course, the Barnsley fans."
